Thinking Day Sleepover - Nakusp, BC

View Photo Album

15 parents along with 90 members of Girl Guides of Canada from Sparks to Pathfinders and their Guiders from Kaslo, New Denver, Edgewood and Nakusp joined together at the Nakusp Arena Auditorium for an overnight Hawaiian themed sleepover.

Hawaiian Banquet

The banquet room was decorated with brightly coloured tablecloths and a play dough Tiki napkin ring marked each place setting. (Thanks to the Saddle Mountain Pathfinders for making those!) Tiny foam fish and real shells were scattered among the tables which each boasted a pineapple centrepiece. On the stage were two large rope light palm trees, which looked beautiful against the black backdrop. Our QM staff treated us to Luau of Island delicacies. The buffet tables were marvellously decorated with a variety of creative garnishes including an Ice sculpture as the main centrepiece and tiny radish mice nibbled away at the corners of the veggie platters. The main course consisted of Ham, baked potatoes and a variety of tropical island salads. Dessert was a blue sea of Jell-O , with white caps of whipped cream. YUM!!

Crafts and Activities

As girls arrived Friday night the first craft to make were leis with flowers cut out of fun foam, then at 6pm it was time for the Luau to start.

After dinner, it was time to continue earning the Aloha Patch from the Girl Scouts of Hawaii. (Which can be found at www.girlscouts-hawaii.org )

8 Patrols of Girls (divided by branch) visited 9 stations after dinner, were they bowled with real coconuts and knocked down hand crafted pineapple bowling pins, created volcanoes, learned Hawaiian words, decorated clay pots in tropical colours, made grass skirts and then learned to hula dance; watched a DVD about whales and pinned the fin on a whale; learned about water conservation and lastly decorated a parrot hat craft made of shrink art. The stations ran 15 minutes each and were completed in 2.5 hours. Mug up consisted of popcorn and juice, and for campfire, each unit sang a favourite song.

The Next Morning

By 6:30 a.m. most everyone was up so the tranquil sounds of Hawaii were played on the sound system to wake the balance of the sleeping girls.

At breakfast we were treated to a wide variety of fruits, muffins and hot cereal.

Cleanup went quickly and we were soon saying goodbye to everyone. As each girl signed out they received a crest from Hawaii and a Guiding bag that was decorated with a T-shirt iron on (created on the PC) with the Event name and date on it.
